Let me just start this off by saying you have a problem reading about raw sewage, stop now. It isn't terribly disgusting but ick.
I am a mother and because I am a mother I have had to change diapers, wipe bums and deal with puke on surfaces that should never have puke on them.
Since I stopped camping on a regular basis I have also developed this aversion to public portable toilets (aka porta potties). They SMELL and since I have seen so many movies where people get locked in them I do not go to one by myself. When I use them I generally take someone with me to stand guard at the door so I don't risk getting locked in. I am by no means claustrophobic but being stuck in a porta pottie wigs me out.
Yesterday while driving around my usual monthly route I was sitting in my "new" car and all of a sudden all I could smell was shit. I swear I was stopped on top of someones fresh sample. Luckily I wasn't. No one threw a bag of it in my car either. I looked. Trust me. I finally got out of my car to look around because geeze if I have this new car and if I drive it for a bit every day and ends up smelling like this, I don't care, the car is a gonner.
After my circle around the outside of the car I noticed a truck stopped outside one of the toilets. They dude was pumping it. OH MY!!! Once I realized what he was doing my stomach lurched and I managed to get back in the car before vomiting. Like I said, I am a mother and I have dealt with poo but this is nothing like it and I have a weak stomach for smells like this.
I decided to leave that area and go concentrate on my next area and then finish up my current area. About half way through my second area there was the damn smell again. HOLY SHIT this is got to be the worst day to be in the field working. I roll up the windows and put the a/c on and the smell didn't go away. I forced myself to work through the smell this time because I can't be driving back and forth, back and forth wasting gas and money on my work. Well I could but I am not going to over charge if I could avoid it.
Eventually I needed to get around this truck and so I slowly drove around him. On the other side the smell was a bazillion times worse and I had no other choice to to empty my stomach in the middle of a construction site. Of course where did I go to do such a thing? The freshly emptied Johnnie on the Spot.
How do you guys deal with foul odors?
