The Big Five

Today is the day my Lil' Man turns five years old. When I think back about that day five years ago when he was born at 2:35am I thought that I would never ever forget the pain of the contractions. I haven't but the thing that was worse than the contractions was the needle in my back from the epidural. Enough gross labour talk.

We had a party for him on the weekend and in attendance other than a multitude of adults were his cousins Maddy, Reid, Chelsea and his best friend B. Since his birthday is so close to Halloween he wanted his first Halloween party where kids can wear his costumes. Chances are that it won't be the last Halloween themed birthday for him.

He wanted his cake in the shape of the number 5 this year. I was more than happy to make it. So I decided to decorate it in fondant. It was my first time working with fondant and let me tell you the Duff's brand is super duper easy to use and it doesn't smell like play-dough although when you need it to mix the colour, it feels like it (at least to me) because you are playing with coloured dough like substance.

So, on Thursday night I baked the cake and cute it into the shape of a 5. I put it in the fridge to chill it after it hits room temperature and I did the crumb coat and let it stay in the fridge overnight.

The next day with the aid of my Michale's coupon I went to get the fondant and proceeded to ice the cake. I started rather late at night and I worked until 2 am on the cake. I was proud of the cake, despite the fact that I didn't do that good of a job covering the cake fully. I had missing spots because it was difficult to trim the inside of the 5 to allow for the excess to drape over. *sigh*

So the time comes to go to the party. I remember everything for the cake and we set up once we get to my aunts house in Smiths Falls.

Fast forward to the cake part...so Lil' Man is happy that his cake looks cool despite the fact that it doesn't go with the Halloween theme because he wanted the 5 cake.

We are cutting up and serving the cake. Evey one loves it and wants seconds if there are any left. My Lil' Man says he doesn't want anymore. That is strange since he only had one bite. He said he didn't want anymore "because it is AWFUL". Mommy made me an awful cake". I tried so hard not to be hurt and cry because to be honest, I spent hours on this cake for this little devil and it is "awful". Everyone else liked it. I even liked it and I don't like cake.

Here is a picture of the AWFUL cake.
