Auto Pilot

You know those days when you leave the office and you have no idea how you got home?  Those days when you are in such a daze from work that you forget the milk AND the bread from the grocery store on your way home even though you never forget them. Those days where you don't remember if any wild turkeys, deer or moose decided to play chicken with your car.

I find in the winter months I pull into the drive way but I don't remember most of the drive.  Its eerie because I could have been so distracted that I could have caused an accident.

Today, I was thinking how nice it would be to have an auto pilot button that drove the car like cruise control and got off at the exit you needed, made the turns you needed and didn't run off the road or hit anyone.  It wouldn't hit anyone because everyone else would be using the auto pilot too and on the off chance that the cars didn't have the auto pilot engaged, the other cars would sense it, send a signal and either speed up or slow down or move out of the way if need be.  Kinda like the Jetson's flying in space.

Am I strange for thinking about the fact that one day this might happen?  We do have GPS units in our car and it is very possible, although unlikely, that it could happen.  Computers run our cars, GPS units know where we are at all times, cruise control keeps the speed that we set. Really, how far off are we?

I love driving.  I mean I L. O. V. E. driving.  I have a gov job that requires me to drive 90% of the time.  I drive to calm down, I drive to make my self happy, I drive when I am in a good mood, I drive when I am in a bad mood.  I drive hours with no place to go, I drive with purpose.  I simply love driving.  However, the thought of being stuck in traffic with everyone else going to the same place where I rest my head every night kills me.  That is why I need auto pilot.

What about you?  Do you find yourself wondering how you got home or to work?  Do you like to drive just for the pure pleasure of it even with the price of fuel?
