The One Where He Learns How to Skate

This past weekend marked the opening for the Winterlude Festival here in Ottawa.

On Saturday Lil' Man and I headed out to the festivities.

Our first stop was the pancake breakfast that was put on by Enbridge (aka us, the people who pay an outrageous amount for $5 of gas a month). Oddly enough, the pancakes were good (maybe because I was very hungry), the hot chocolate was more watery than chocolaty but the utensils were strong and bio-degradable. Honestly, I would have preferred more chocolaty hot chocolate to the strong bio-degradable utensils that will take something like 100 years to break down.

Our second stop was the ice sculptures. The ones that were carved and the ones that were being carved. Lil' Man loved how the idea gets put down on paper first then put onto the ice to make it real.

Next was my favourite part of Winterlude, ever since I visited Ottawa a few years before I moved here. Snow taffy. We stopped at Temple's Sugar Bush and grabbed two pieces. I asked for a smaller one made for Lil' Man since he doesn't like sugar all that much. I forgot to ask for a smaller one for me since I never eat all of mine and end up wasting most of it. Sad, I know. I'm not one for too many sweets either.

We then moved onto skating. I can tell you for 100% certainty that I should not teach children how to skate. My son does have impeccable balance but he fell only three times in the 45 minutes we were on the canal. Twice were my fault.

Before we could sit down to put on his skates, he informed me the he had to pee. GREAT!!! Try and find a washroom on the canal for a 5 year old. Goodness knows, there are not enough of them.

Eventually, we got back to the benches we first saw. The ones opposite of Confederation Park. We sat down and I got him all laced up and ready to go. Took the blade guards off and he stood up. He didn't fall like I anticipated. He tired to move and he felt uneasy. I had to pull him to get him out of the common area and I asked if he could walk on the ice in the skates. He tried and was successful. I asked if he could do what everyone else was doing (with ease) he attempted to glide like everyone else and fell on his face. It was so funny that I wish I was filming that part.

Slowly, he began to feel more comfortable on the skates and started dancing on the spot and wasn't paying attention when I took out my DSLR (I'm glad he wasn't paying attention because he usually clams up as soon as he sees it).

When we were leaving the canal for the day Lil' Man pointed to all of the people on the ice and said "the whole world must be on there". Sometimes I forget that he is only five.

Here is "the whole world" on the canal.
After skating, we went to the Rideau Centre because I had to get a case for my iPhone from the Apple Store. I am NEVER (kidding) taking him in there again. Normally, I am a person who likes to browse and play with gadgets and such but I know now that my son has taken after me and it took us over an hour to get out of the Apple Store. I was in there to get a case and was supposed to be (according to him) "in and out faster than a flash". I would have been if he didn't discover the kids computers.

After all was said and done, we headed home and I went through the shots on the computer (that I managed to get working) and instantly fell in love with this one.

I love my Lil' Man!

What about you, what did you do this weekend? Did you attend Winterlude?
