Capital Punishment

Lately my Lil' Man has been testing the waters with lying. Some are cute and funny others are not. The ones that are cute and funny I calmly tell him that they are funny but people don't like liars and if he keeps lying people won't trust him and he won't have any friends. (There was one the other day where he said that he had met my friend ET before. I know he has not so I asked him how he met her. He said "When you were sleeping at Nannies I took your car to her house" - Cute but obviously a lie.)

I am going a bit overboard but in a round about way I am correct. That is how I lost a few friendships growing up. I finally realized that in addition the those I was lying to that I was hurting myself more by pushing those people I cared about away by lying to them. Even to this day, my parents don't even trust me. They haven't said anything but I have a feeling.

In an effort to curb my sons lying, when it is a "bad" one. He gets a time out in his room for a minimum of 5 minutes. He gets one chance to either tell us that he is kidding or that he was lying. If he doesn't come clean, he gets another 10 minutes. 15 minutes in your room with no toys (because I take them out) has to be boring for a kid. You'd think he would have learned by now.

Do you think that I am over doing it with the length of time? To be fair he gets one every 3 or 4 days.
